As soon as it hit Oct. 1, I convinced myself that autumn had arrived, that fall was finally falling… despite my being in Gainesville where the weather doesn't really change much. There’s a fall vibe, at least, and we can all agree that Halloween in our little college town creeps up on you quickly.

In theory, picking out costumes is fun; in reality, it gets put off for too long until you're left scrambling, and then your outfits end up looking a little rough — for me at least.

Well, this year I decided to step it up, think about it and start preparation early. There have been so many funny moments in pop culture that have inspired costume ideas, as well as many classics that have yet to be attempted. With that, here is a categorized guide of the best Halloween costumes I want to see this year.

Bestie/Duo Costumes:

Siren and Unicorn (Mythical Creatures)

For a more whimsical aesthetic!! There are so many different ways to do these, or you can easily add a fairy, angel or other mythical creature into the mix. I like costumes where you can keep using the fun clothes you bought, and these can incorporate pieces you already own or will wear again.

Smoke and Stack (“Sinners”)

We all loved “Sinners,” yet I haven't seen a lot of people doing this one. I feel like it will be recognizable, yet cool, and, most importantly, niche enough to not be over done.

This is another one where you can use pieces you already have or buy some that can be reused in the future!

Alter Egos

Here is more of a last minute duo idea! Many have at least one wig from other Halloween costumes or themed parties, providing an excuse to wear it again (I’m personally on it this year with my solo costumes, but my roommate and I will probably end up doing this one night since we're very type B).

It's supposed to be an “alter egos” costume, but we'll definitely be telling each person that asks different things for fun.

Niche Costumes:

Lady Jessica ("Dune")

I’ve seen people do many cool outfits from “Dune,” but a Lady Jessica outfit takes the cake. It's definitely a more difficult costume to accomplish, but I feel it's unique, stunning and distinctive. I know there are fashionistas out there that can emulate her in a stylish way.

Futuristic Flight attendant (“The Fifth Element”)

“The Fifth Element” is also a more niche pull for costumes. My dad would make fun of me for saying that, but I feel like not a lot of people have heard of this movie.

It is filled with super cool, neo-futuristic outfits, and a futuristic flight attendant is a sick way to add a twist to what can be a common costume!

Don’t be afraid to do a cool-girl take on a silly costume. Bandage dresses have been trending this year. I love a costume that you can serve in, but still laugh at and not take too seriously!

60s Black Cat

A classic costume with a twist! It gives you an excuse to go retro with your make-up and hair, and play around with black and white makeup.

2026 Moments:

I had too much fun with the 2026 ones. I know there are many more funny pop culture moments that people will be recreating, but this one was too funny not to include. I’m so excited to see what everyone comes up with!

Empire State Couple

This one might have been forgotten, but it's so easy and fun! It's a great low-effort couples costume, all you would really need is all black outfits and a banner.

Nikki (“Obsession”)

Everyone will probably be doing this one — but who cares! There are definitely other outfits from the movie you can take inspiration from, but this one is so simple. You may even already have all of these pieces in your closet!

Skeleton Banging Shield Meme

This one is a bit of a reach, but I think it's so funny. It's basically just a skeleton costume plus a shield and sword.

ADÉLA

Adéla is having her moment right now, and this is another one that lets you wear a fun wig!

Sabrina and Madonna

These two also had a big moment this year, and the outfit inspiration for both of them is so cute.

Couples Costumes:

Charlie and Emma (“The Drama”)

People are forgetting about “The Drama” after “Obsession” came out, but I think it is so simple and recognizable.

Medieval Partners

Like the mermaid/unicorn duo from the beginning, this one has variety too! Choose from jesters, vikings, fairies, princesses, knights and probably more. All the medieval twists make costumes more unique and fun to do.

“Norman F*cking Rockwell” Album Cover (by Lana Del Rey)

For the Lana fans! Some people like to get in character or do bits for their costumes, which could come into play for this one since you guys would be doing this pose all night…maybe even singing some of the songs on the album.

Jane and Jessie ("Breaking Bad")

This is a swaggy costume idea for couples and would be recognized by many!

Last Minute Costumes:

Clark Kent (“Superman”)

I mean come on, this one is so simple but easily known and cool!

80s Aerobics Instructors

I love retro costumes. You could play ‘80s songs all night and do a fire blowout or curly hairstyle!

Crow

This is a pretty unique costume for being a last minute idea, and you could play a lot with the makeup and accessories (like adding a feather boa or feathers in your hair, etc).

Forrest (“Forrest Gump”)

Another example of a costume not many people will be doing, but that will be known.  Not to mention, these seem like common closet items!

Even if costuming or fashion isn't really what you're into, use Halloween as an excuse to get out of your comfort zone!

If you start now, you can have fun with it, instead of feeling rushed (like I have felt every year). There is so much fun to be had, and who doesn't like getting out of character every now and then?

Elle Lignarolo is a junior majoring in English and Econ! She’s very excited to be working with Rowdy, and she's dressing up as Wonderwoman, a medieval princess (made her own hat btw)...and isn't sure what else yet!
